The arrival of the sail training ship Leader marks a historic moment for Port Dinorwic, as we undertake the winter refit of what is likely the largest sailing vessel to enter our harbour for around 90 years. Originally built in 1892, Leader is a 105-foot Brixham trawler, currently operated by The Atlantic Youth Trust Ireland. These vessels are renowned for their sturdy construction and seakeeping abilities. This ambitious project not only breathes new life into a remarkable vessel but also reconnects the port with its rich maritime history, utilising the skills and traditions that have long been associated with our coastal community.
This refit represents more than just a technical challenge—it is a symbol of our commitment to maritime heritage and sail training for future generations. Once restored, Leader will continue her role as a sail training ship, offering invaluable hands-on experience to trainees and fostering a deep appreciation for traditional seamanship. The sight of her towering masts in Port Dinorwic is a powerful reminder of our seafaring past and an exciting promise for the future.
